First off, apologies to all that care for my non-appearance at the lecture yesterday. No doubt it would have been helpful to speak these half-thoughts and clarify them a tad. And maybe it would have been more obvious what was a joke and what was deathly serious. Or maybe it wouldn't because I don't have a fucking clue. It started as a joke. People assume it's a joke. We definitely want it to be funny. But we're not trying to write a comedy – there's a fine line between rolling in the aisles and writhing in embarrassment. And we're not trying to take the piss – at least, not out of Kate Bush. Voila! The babysteps of Kate Bush - The Musical. We're hoping to have a clue what we're doing soon.

We're staking out our comfort zones already – Phoebe as the dostuff, organised thespian, me as cynic and Kate Bush information repository. Hannah's the one with true musical ability and complete belief in her lack thereof. It was Phoebe's idea – I convinced her to make the joke the dream and Hannah came along for the rider, ditching her already fairly well-developed idea in the process. Since we're all from different fields (I'm a writing student, Hannah's a music student and Phoebe's a theatre student) we're imagining that as our ideas develop, we'll have the deciding votes in regards to our respective specialisations - but at the moment it's all a big melting pot of thought.

Some notes:

1) The title will probably change, to call it 'Kate Bush - The Musical' would be aligning ourselves very deliberately with the We Will Rock Yous that we're already aligning ourselves with through choosing to do a musical using Kate Bush material. It's all about the parody/pastiche/satire spectrum.

2) We're seeing it as a series of set pieces, with a theatrical score to get us from A to B, rather than having a strict set of characters and narrative and other such things. The danger with the former is that it will come across as a poor variety show; the danger with the latter is that it might be an over-embracement of the camp and the cheese.

3) We certainly want to embrace the camp.

4) I don't want to give too much away at this stage, but we're thinking of casios, ginger elvis, karoake versions and blinking.

5) I don't know about Hannah, but my theatrical experience is limited to amateur ensemble productions of Shakespeare and childrens' theatre. Phoebe's got her work cut out with me and Hannah in terms of movement. Hannah's probably going to have to help me with voice. Urgh.

I'll let the others elaborate further if they feel like it.
